Gifts and Donations
Books, Journals and Audiovisual Materials
The Library welcomes donations of books, journals and audiovisual materials in enriching our existing collections. Gifts can be especially useful in enhancing historical breadth or further developing subject areas. We typically will add materials if they are in good condition, and support La Trobe University courses. Items are accepted for their suitability for inclusion in the most appropriate campus collection.
The Library is most interested in:
- Australiana, Australian fiction and local histories
- Histories and biographies
- Scholarly books and AV material
- Textbooks published in the last two years
- Award winning books and AV material.
There are, however, some materials that we can't use:
- Superseded editions of textbooks or reference works
- Materials that have been stored for a long time and have a musty smell, or show signs of mould
- Science and technology materials published more than four years ago
- Condensed versions (eg., Reader's Digest condensed books).
Gifts may not be accepted if the donor wishes to place any limitations or restrictions on their use or disposal. It is Library policy that gift material is integrated into the existing collections, and is subject to the same conditions of use as those collections, including retention, location, use and disposal.
The Library reserves the right to decline or dispose of gift material. Because our shelf space is limited, please be aware that we must carefully review all individual titles for their usefulness. We usually do not accept duplicates of titles already in our collections, or books in poor condition.
The Library normally accepts journal donations, in subscription form or as back issues, that complete existing holdings in the collection.
Please contact the relevant Campus Librarian or the Collections Librarian, Eva Fisch on 03 9479 2926 if you wish to donate material to the Library.
The Library is eligible to participate in the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program. The Program encourages gifts of significant items to libraries, public art museums and other cultural institutions by offering donors a tax deduction for the market value of the gifts. It operates under Subdivision 30-A of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.
