Library Service Charter

Welcome to your library. Your library team will proactively work with you to help you achieve your learning, teaching and research goals. We give a commitment to provide a range of quality services, resources, facilities and training online and at each campus library.

This service charter details what you can expect from your Library and what you can do to help us provide a better service for all.

All clients
We will We ask you to

Treat you with respect and courtesy

  • Treat staff and each other with respect and courtesy

Provide a range of spaces that support different learning and research styles and activities

  • Consider others in your use of library spaces
  • Not talk in silent areas
  • Talk quietly in other library areas
  • Switch your phone to silent
  • Observe booking times for rooms and computers

Provide facilities that are safe, well maintained and clean

  • Tell us if facilities are not safe, well maintained or clean
  • Comply with the Library's food and drink requirements
  • Put your rubbish in the bins provided
  • Take responsibility for your belongings
  • Look after the Library's furniture and equipment
  • Follow directions from Library staff
  • Leave the Library when requested at closing time and during emergency procedures

Provide access to computers, network and wireless connectivity and power for your laptops.

Provide 24x7 access to the Library website and electronic resources

  • Tell us if there are broken links on the Library website
  • Tell us about hardware problems
  • Tell us about problems in accessing or using online resources
  • Comply with the University's requirements for computing use
  • Don't share your login

Provide printing and photocopying services

  • Tell us about hardware and paper problems
  • Comply with the requirements of copyright law

Provide access to resources to support learning and research.

Provide timely and equitable access to electronic and print resources, in particular those in high demand

  • Be responsible for the resources that you borrow and return them on time
  • Not damage or deface any library materials
  • Not lend your card to another student nor borrow on behalf of others
  • Tell us if you have any special needs

Send you email reminders for your loans and holds

  • Read the reminders that we send to you via your University email account

Provide a range of resources, services and training that meet your research and learning needs.

  • Take every opportunity to get the most from the resources, services and training available to you

Keep you informed of changes and new resources and services

  • Regularly check the Library website
  • Provide feedback on resources and services

Keep your student information confidential

  • Keep your details current
  • Immediately contact the Library if you lose your student card

Consult with you on new developments, services and resources through :

  • Usability testing
  • Product and service trials
  • The Library Consultative Committees
  • Participate in usability testing

  • Provide feedback to your Library Consultative Committee representatives.

Continuously review and improve services and resources

  • Give us feedback

  • Recommend materials for purchase
Academic staff
We will We ask you to

Acquire information resources for your teaching programs

  • Provide reading lists including items for Reserve by required dates
  • Contact your Faculty Librarian for advice with embedding library resources into your subjects
  • Suggest materials for purchase

Assist in the new course process

  • Keep your Faculty Librarian informed of new course proposals

Provide a range of information literacy training options for your students

  • Contact your Faculty Librarian for advice with embedding information literacy into your subjects

Communicate regularly with you on service and policy developments via the Library web site, Faculty liaison and University and Library publications

  • Regularly check the Library web site and University and Library publications

Obtain publications by La Trobe Academic staff and Researchers for the collection.

  • Tell your Faculty Librarian if you have any new published works or research

Provide expert research support services.

Provide access to information resources to support your research

  • Keep your Faculty Librarian informed of your research projects and grants
  • Take advantage of the training, services and assistance provided by the Library and your Faculty Librarian

Provide an institutional repository (La Trobe University Research Repository) that

  • Securely archives your research
  • Exposes your research to an international audience
  • Deposit your research into the Research Repository

Provide a range of membership options

  • Understand the extent of the resources and services available to you

Provide access to designated Library resources
