Dynamic and innovative, the Library extends beyond its physical boundaries.
As the key provider of quality information and related services, we are proactive and flexible in fulfilling information needs.
We work with La Trobe University students and staff to achieve teaching, learning and research goals.
Mission Statement
La Trobe University Library is committed to achieving the highest standards in the provision of information resources and services in order to advance the teaching, learning and research of the University.
Preamble
The Library Strategic Plan 2005-2008 builds on the achievements of the previous strategic plans for 2000-2004 and 1996-2000. The current Plan follows the structure of the University Strategic Plan 2006-2010, and in accordance with that plan is arranged in three broad categories of Learning and Teaching, Research and Supporting the Core Business of the University.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
Outcome: To achieve excellent learning outcomes
Library Strategies
- Further develop information resources to support learning and teaching.
- Continue to expand and extend access to electronic resources and electronic delivery of services.
- Enhance seamless access to scholarly information.
- Assist in discovery, retrieval and evaluation of scholarly information.
- Integrate information literacy initiatives into the learning and teaching process to provide information skills that assist lifelong learning.
- Participate in implementation of the University Learning and Teaching Plan.
- Provide flexible delivery of services and resources.
- Continue to develop and enhance a quality learning environment.
Outcome: To be the University of choice in the communities we serve
Library Strategies
- Provide library services and resources to support a diverse student cohort.
- Explore library-to-library relationships with the International Network of Universities' partner institutions.
- Enhance library services to international students, both on shore and off shore.
RESEARCH
Outcome: To produce world-class research with a strong focus on impact
Library Strategies
- Continue to develop information resources to support existing and emerging research priorities.
- Provide consultation and training in the use of tools and services that support research.
- Enhance seamless access to scholarly information.
- Assist in discovery, retrieval and evaluation of scholarly information.
- Expand collaborative initiatives to enhance information resources to support research.
- Raise awareness of emerging scholarly publishing models, including open access.
SUPPORTING THE CORE BUSINESS OF THE UNIVERSITY
Outcome: To achieve and maintain a high level of satisfaction with the University among students, staff and external stakeholders
Library Strategies
- Maintain an organisational culture that supports a client-focussed approach.
- Undertake continuous review and evaluation of all services and operations of the library and institute best practice.
- Create an organisational culture that supports flexibility and responsiveness to change.
- Provide appropriate services for the various communities served by the University including alumni, business, professional and local communities.
- Engage with business, professional, educational and local communities to develop mutually beneficial links.
Outcome: To be a leader among Australian universities on organizational efficiency and effectiveness
Library Strategies
- Ensure recruitment and retention of high quality, innovative staff.
- Encourage an environment where staff are valued for their specialised skills and experience and their contribution to the delivery of library services.
- Promote the contribution of staff to the achievement of excellence in the workplace, both as individuals and as team members.
- Support staff in maximizing their potential through continuous learning and development.
- Create an environment where flexibility is nurtured and valued.
- Encourage all staff to view the organisation from a One Library perspective.
- Provide library support for University developments in teaching and research at regional campuses.
- Adopt appropriate mechanisms to work towards equity of access to information resources and services for clients at regional campuses.
- Resource and facilitate library based research.
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment conducive to effective and efficient work practices.
- Ensure provision of a quality ICT infrastructure to maximise access and delivery to information resources and library services.
