Facilities for People with Disabilities

New students with disabilities who consider they may experience difficulty in using the library's facilities and require special services should contact the Equality and Diversity Centre Coordinator at the Bendigo Campus

Users with disabilities or special needs are encouraged to contact the library early in the year to organise a tour of the Library and its facilities. To discuss individual needs or make arrangements to use extra services in advance of arriving in the library contact:

Library Staff Support

In addition to the help provided by the Information and Loans Desk services, library staff can organise services such as collecting items from the shelves, arranging for extended loan periods or computer access time, assistance with enlargement of photocopies. Eligible students wanting to use these services need to make arrangements in advance.

  • Photocopying and enlarging print
    Requests for library staff to do this require 48 hours notice. Copying is charged at the standard rate of 12 cents per black & white A4 page
  • Retrieving items from the collection
    Requests with full bibliographic details are needed and 24 hours notice is required
Building Access

The building layout and access around the Library is complicated, so the following may help you.

  • For a copy of the Physical Access Guide to the Edwards Road Campus contact the Equity and Access Coordinator, Student Services.
  • Ensure you have discussed special needs with the Equity & Access Coordinator.
  • Prior to your first visit to the library, ensure contact has been made with the Information Services Librarian if Lift access is required.
  • Ask to have a demonstration of the lift access and request that staff show you where the library intercom is situated for access to the lift.
Equipment

The library provides one workstation fully equipped with adaptive technology for students with specific disabilities. Another two workstations with large (21") screens have wheelchair access

Booking the Workstation
The workstation can be booked for periods of up to 3 hours at a time. Booking the station can be organised up to 2 weeks in advance. Any booking requirements outside these guidelines will need to be organised in consultation with the Equity & Access Coordinator and/or the Information Services Librarian.

The workstation features:

  • an ergonomic, fully adjustable desk and chair
  • a 19" screen with enlarged icons and mouse cursor
  • JAWS software
  • Scanner with an Automatic Document Feeder and OCR software
  • ReadPlease2003 Screen Reader
  • Zoom Text
  • CD writer
  • SmartView (magnifying equipment connected to PC for viewing text direct from printed pages and calculator attached for magnifying numerical calculations)
  • Cordless group listening centre with 3 sets of phones
  • Four Track Tape Recorder
