Jan Leeroy New, winner of the Ateneo Art Awards and current artist in residence at the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre, is developing his new installation ”Psychopomp” on site using recycled and found objects.  Leeroy’s work explores hybrid forms of deities and supernatural beings.  See the interview and installation photographs on the ABC website.

The exhibition is running until Sunday, 8 November from 10am-5pm. This is a free public exhibition at the Visual Arts Centre, 121 View St, Bendigo.

‘The Challenges Facing Barack Obama: An Historical Perspective’

William Chafe is the Alice Mary Baldwin Professor of History at Duke University, USA.  Much of his professional scholarship reflects his long-term interest in issues of race and gender equality. For many years he has been a leader in the effort to bring interdisciplinary studies to higher education. Professor Chafe is a former president of the Organization of American Historians, and served for nine years as Dean of the Faculty and Vice-Provost at Duke University. Professor Chafe has been co-director of the Duke Oral History Program, and its Centre for the Study of Civil Rights and Race Relations; he is a founder and the former Academic Director of the Duke-UNC Center for Research on Women; he is also a founder and senior research associate of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.

19-23 October is Open Access Week. The Library invites you to find out more about this important and growing international movement that uses the internet to throw open the locked doors that once hid knowledge.

Open Access encourages the unrestricted sharing of research results with everyone, everywhere, for the advancement and enjoyment of science and society. It is the principle that all research should be freely accessible online, immediately after publication, and it’s gaining more momentum around the world as research funders and policy makers throw their weight behind it.

Open Access is widely supported in Australia and by Australian Universities, including La Trobe. The Library is developing an open access research repository promoting the research of La Trobe staff, while operating within copyright restrictions.

It is THAT time of year.  Final exams and assignments are looming. Don’t add to stress levels by making the library a noisy place to be.

On Tuesday, 20 October at 12pm, Henry Reynolds, leading historian of indigenous dispossession, and Ghassan Hage, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Melbourne, will debate Judith Brett, Professor of Politics at La Trobe, and John Hirst, Australia’s leading political historian, on the question of Racism in Australia.
