eCoffee- Visualisation laboratories & analysis
The development of hubs for visualisation capability at La Trobe allow for interactive and immersive research collaboration, visualisation of simulations and deep imaging for a variety of disciplines.
In 2009 the first elements of such capability was formed with the move of the Virtual Beam Line for the Synchrotron to a dedicated facility. This project will be La Trobe’s first Vis Lab for remote use of scientific instruments, particularly the Synchrotron, and imaging of scientific data. This will allow large and complex visualisations to be viewed and manipulated on a giant display using simple computer interfaces.
There are also plans to develop a life sciences Vis Lab with touch sensitive large display technology for examining complex molecules. This will aid in the development of drugs and basic molecular science.
These exciting new ways of viewing data and collaborating on research projects will provide researchers the tools needed for modern analysis and simulation.
This forum will be presented by: Chris Myers, Chief Infrastructure Architect, VeRSI and Dr Paul Pigram, Engineering & Mathematical Sciences, LTU.
Date: Friday, 8 October
Time: 10am -11am
Venue: level 1, seminar room, Melbourne campus library

Draft collection development framework
The Library has developed a draft collection development framework whose objective is to articulate the broad principles which ensure that Library information resources are acquired in line with the University’s strategic teaching and research directions. Collection building activities ensure that La Trobe students and staff have access to information resources appropriate to their learning, teaching and/or research needs through both physical collections and online access.
The Framework has been revised in light of the comments received so far. Please feel free to view the document and leave comments or feedback via the online form.

Melbourne Library opens its new doors
There was lots of excitement at Melbourne campus Library this morning as crowds gathered in the Agora to be the first through the new ground level entrance.

To celebrate the occasion, the first 100 students through the new doors received goodie bags loaded with freebies provided by the Library and many of the Agora traders.

The new entrance will make it easier to access the Library’s new learning spaces from the social areas of the Agora. The old entrance on level 2 had been the main access to the Library for over 40 years. Those doors are now closed, never to re-open.

Our first patron through the new entrance with University Librarian, Ainslie Dewe
Building work in the Library on level 2 continues and is expected to be completed by November.
