La Trobe University Library news and information!

Keeping it down in the Library

Now that the Library entrance is on ground level rather than the upper level, it is the Library’s intention to establish and more clearly delineate quiet and silent spaces in the building. This was an intentional aspect of the design for the Library refurbishment.

The following zones have been established and are in the process of being sign posted and communicated to Library users.

Level 1 (ground floor). Learning Commons* – this space is designed as a technology enabled collaborative learning space where students can study in pairs or groups either in the open areas or in study rooms or booths.

Level 2. This level is intended to be for quiet study only.

Level 3. This level is for silent individual study only, with individual study carrels and workstations in specific areas.

There are Library floorplans and directories on pillars througout the Library which clearly show the quiet and silent spaces. These floorplans are also available online.

Library Service Charter

The Library Service Charter sets out what the Library provides and what we ask of Library users. A printable version (pdf) is also available.

*While there are many references on the concept, a useful overview of the Learning Commons concept can be found in Learning commons : evolution and collaborative essentials edited by Barbara Schader, available from the Library.
