Why does the library continue to buy new DVDs that are Region 1 format when we live in Region 4? I can often go to my local video shop and get the same DVDs so it is not a case that they are not avalaible for purchase in our format.

The library purchases DVDs from all regions.  Most modern DVD players, even inexpensive ones are able to play DVDs from all regions, and thus we purchase where materials are cheapest, and also readily available.  Release dates sometimes vary between Australia and overseas sources.  I do appreciate however, that some gaming consoles are also able to play DVDs but are more limited in the regions they will play.  I will take your feedback into account in our future purchasing.
