Transferring print journals to electronic-only format

The Library is continuing to expand its collection of online journals and we are now planning for the 2011-2012 transfer of print titles to electronic-only subscriptions.

You can view the list of candidate titles here.

These titles must be available in equivalent online cover-to-cover versions in order for them to be transferred.  Titles with high quality art images or other graphics, and some weekly or monthly magazines have been excluded from the transfer list.

The Library welcomes any comments on the suitability of converting these titles, and the reasons why an individual print subscription should be retained, or an electronic transfer should be expedited. Comments should be emailed to the Collection Development Librarian, Eva Fisch, by 17 June.

The benefits of this strategy are as follows:

  • It supports the University’s strategic and sustainability initiatives relating to research, teaching and learning.
  • All journal titles transferred to electronic format will be available at all campuses.
  • There is 24-hour desktop access, and downloading or printing for local and remote users.
  • Multiple users can access an issue at the same time.
  • Searching is faster and more flexible.
  • It enables an expanded electronic Reserve service.
  • It enables access to journal issues from any internet terminal, including home.
  • It removes the need to come to the library, and to locate, photocopy or borrow issues.
