2011 Jonathan Mann Memorial Lecture

The Jonathan Mann Lecture is an annual public lecture event held on the Albury-Wodonga campus, with an ongoing theme of ‘The River Murray and its People’.

Date and time: Thursday 28 July, lecture commencing at 6 pm
Venue: Main Lecture Theatre, Building 6, Albury-Wodonga Campus
Topic: ‘The Basin Plan – Who Needs It?’

The 2011 lecture will be the 19th lecture and will differ from previous events delivered by individual speakers by adopting a ‘Community Conversation’ format, facilitating the involvement of key experts, stakeholders and audience members in a serious consideration of the central issues associated with water resource management within the Murray-Darling Basin.

The conversation will be moderated by eminent journalist, Kerry O’Brien.

Participating stakeholders/experts:

  • Dr Arlene Harriss-Buchan – Healthy Rivers Campaigner, Australian Conservation Foundation
  • Mr Danny O’Brien – Chief Executive Officer, National Irrigators Council
  • Professor Ben Gawne – Director, The Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre
  • Dr Neil Byron – Member, Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists
  • Professor Barry Hart – Member, of the Murray Darling Basin Authority

It is likely the event will be well attended by local residents, students and other community members.  In the past, a crowd of 400-500 has been attracted by speakers such as John Doyle and Professor Tim Flannery. RSVPs will therefore be essential via email to oed.aw@latrobe.edu.au or phone 02 6024 9820.

The Community Conversation will be followed by light refreshments in the foyer where audience members will be able to mingle with the speakers and guests of the University.
