Angela Cavalieri exhibit at LUMA

Parole Viaggianti: Angela Cavalieri’s Travelling Words

Books by Angela Cavalieri are now on display in the foyer of the Melbourne campus library to coincide with the exhibition, Parole Viagianti: Angela Cavalieri’s Travelling Words, at the La Trobe University Museum of Art.

The artist’s books are not merely replicas of her wall pieces at a reduced size and bound within hard covers. The book concept is key to the meaning and essence of the work, enabling her to explore ideas that her two dimensional works could not. The majority of the text Cavalieri uses in her artworks is in Italian, by authors such as San Francesco d’Assisi, Dante Alighieri, Luigi Pirandello and Italo Calvino, or the anonymous inscriptions copied from European buildings.

Angela Cavalieri has won numerous awards for her work including the Manly Library Artists’ Book Awards, 2011; the Geelong Print Prize Acquisitive Award, 2009; the Silk Cut Print Award, 2000 and the Shell Fremantle Print Award, 1999. Her work is held in numerous collections including the Australian National Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria, State Library of Victoria, the University of Melbourne and Artbank.

This exhibition has been jointly curated by La Trobe University Art Museum and Maroondah Art Gallery.
