Bundoora Library Redevelopment Project (2009 - 2011)
Bundoora annexe
Actively managing the University Library's expanding print collection is an ongoing process. The average occupancy rate of existing shelf space at the Bundoora Library is 93% per cent. This rate exceeds the accepted standard (86 per cent) at which a library is considered full.
The Library has regularly ceded books to archival storage at the CARM centre, removed duplicates of older texts, and has an ongoing program to purchase electronic materials wherever possible, so that physical space to accommodate new materials is maximised.
Despite these measures, over the years the space to accommodate the Library's print collections has encroached on the area available for reading and study. At the same time, the demand for Library student study space has significantly increased. These are the issues which the Library redevelopment is designed to address.
One of the ways the Library is making space for changing student needs and to accommodate the existing print collection is to establish an offsite store. The new storage facility – to be known as the Bundoora annexe – is located at 666 Waterdale Rd, just 12 minutes walk from the Library, and will meet industry standards for storage and security.

The State Library off site store in Ballarat has shelving and storage similar to that which will house collections at the Bundoora annexe.
The Bundoora annexe will house material currently located in the Library's on-site closed-access compactus as well as low use, older material and print material with electronic equivalents in other collections.
Materials in the offsite annexe collection will be retrievable and borrowable, articles and chapters can be scanned and delivered to the desktop (like current Interlending and Document Delivery), and with prior arrangement, researchers will be able to visit and consult the annex collection. The Bundoora annexe also has a very pleasant study space.
The annexe will provide approximately 20km of shelf space. Commencing in late November 2009 approximately 18.5 km of material will be relocated from the Bundoora campus Library to the annexe. This will leave some space for expansion to meet future needs.
