Bundoora Library Redevelopment Project (2009 - 2011)
How many seats are there currently in the Library? How many will there be after the redevelopment?
In 1986 there were approximately 1700 seats. Expansion of the print collection reduced this to approximately 1200 currently. The redevelopment will add approximately 850 seats/learning spaces, along with further seating in the café/gallery area.
How much collection space is available now? How much is being moved?
There is currently approximately 35km in the public area of the Library plus 13km in the Library's on-site compactus which brings the total to 48km. It is proposed to relocate 18.5km to the Bundoora annexe.
Is putting material in the annexe just a euphemism for throwing it away?
Material relocated to the Bundoora annexe will not be thrown away. It will remain part of the University Library's collection and will be accessible and borrowable. Check details in What's moving and Accessing Collections for further details.
What is the criteria for selecting materials to be relocated?
You can find details of materials to be relocated at What's moving.
What is happening to the entrance and area outside the entrance on the upper level of the Agora?
The entrance to the Library will stay in the same place while the building works are completed on the lower, ground floor level. The covered area and glass wall outside the entrance will remain in place during and after the works, however, there will be changes to the stair ways from ground level to the upper level. Once work is completed on Level 1 (ground level) then the entrance will be moved to this Level along with the Inquiry Desk and other service points.
Will there be the same number of workstations for students during redevelopment?
The computer workstations and study areas currently on Level 1 (ground floor) of the Library will need to be relocated to Level 2 and 3 of the Library during the building works on Level 1. Additional space will be made as lower-use books on Level 3 are relocated to the Library's on-site store. Revised maps and notices will be placed around the Library to let students know where computer workstations are located.
