Bundoora Library Redevelopment Project (2009 - 2011)
What's moving
The high demand for study space in the Library means that during construction, all of Level 1 (Ground floor) needs to be cleared and areas for student study need to be maintained at present levels. This will be achieved through the relocation to Level 2 and 3 of all seating and computer workstations currently on Level 1 (Ground floor).
Major collection moves are required and Library staff have developed a detailed and carefully considered relocation strategy for lower use print materials.
The relocation of collections is scheduled to begin in late November 2009 to allow builders onsite in January 2010.
Materials from the collections outlined below will be moved to the Bundoora annexe which, along with the Library's on site closed access compactus (located on the ground floor, north-west corner of the Library), will house older and lower use materials.
Monographs (Books)
The 320,000 Bundoora General volumes that have not been used in the past 6 years will be transferred to Level 1 of the Library in the onsite compactus, first moving various stored collections from the on site compactus to the off site annexe (e.g. Storage Reference, Storage monograph and Storage Serials collections, etc).
Government Publications
The high use monographs in the Government Publications collection are being progressively recatalogued to the Bundoora General collection and the remaining low use items will be relocated to the off site store. Victorian and Commonwealth Parliamentary papers and Hansard will remain onsite. Currently received print serial titles will be split, with 2000 to the present staying onsite, and pre 2000 moved to offsite storage.
Serials (Journals)
The print journal titles with electronic equivalents, closed runs, or lower use will also be moved to the offsite annexe, and a print and electronic delivery service from the facility will be established. Serials still being received in print format will be split, with 2000 to the present remaining on site and the pre 2000 volumes will go to the off site store.
Moving a significant proportion of the Library's print collection is a major project for the Library, and the largest move of collection items in its history. As the Library has been buying electronic journal back sets at a rapid rate, the impact of these moves may be less than it would have been if such a move was undertaken just a few years ago.
