Places to Study

Students of La Trobe University are eligible to use group study rooms, lockable study carrels and Audiovisual viewing rooms.

How to Borrow a Room or Carrel

Keys for private study carrels and group study rooms may be borrowed from the Inquiry Desk at the Bundoora Campus Library.

Keys for Audiovisual Viewing Rooms may be borrowed from the Audiovisual Desk.

It is necessary to present your student card.

How Long Can They be Used

Study Carrels

  • Undergraduates - 3 hours a day
  • Postgraduates - 8 hours a day
  • Some study carrels will be available for extended use during summer vacation.

Group study rooms

  • 3 hours a day per group, 2 bookings/week

Viewing Rooms

  • 3 hours a day per group, 4 bookings/week.
Extend the Period of Use

The period of use of a study carrel and group study room may not be extended beyond 1 session per day. Exceptions may be made after 5pm Monday-Thursday and after 4pm Friday.

Book a Room or Carrel

Study carrels and group study rooms may be booked up to a week ahead:

  • Bookings for Study Carrels can be made online through the Library Catalogue (see instructions)
  • Bookings for Group Study Rooms must be made in person at the Inquiry Desk
  • Bookings for Audiovisual Group viewing must be made in person at the Audiovisual Desk.

Bookings will lapse if study carrel keys, group study and viewing room keys are not collected within 15 minutes of the booked time, and keys may be issued to other borrowers.

The Library reserves the right to recall a study carrel key, group study room and viewing room key at any time.

Returning Keys

Group study room keys must be handed back to Inquiry Desk staff. Study carrel keys may be returned in the box provided on the Inquiry Desk.

Audiovisual Viewing Room keys must be returned to Audiovisual Desk.

Fines & Overdue Penalties

Overdue Study Carrel keys accrue fines at the rate of 60 cents per hour, or part there of.
Group Study Room and Viewing Room keys accrue fines at the rate of $2.50 for any time up to the 1st hour, and $1.00 for each additional hour, or part thereof.
Keys retained over night will accrue fines. Fines accumulate on all overdue items at all campuses.
When a key is lost, returned damaged, or not returned after a reasonable period of time, the borrower will be charged for the key at replacement cost. A key lost or not returned, and charged for as above, remains the property of the Library if found. Keys presumed lost, but later found and returned will be treated as overdue items.

Conditions of Use

All keys will be issued to one person only, and is not transferable to another person. The person to whom the key is issued is solely responsible for the safe keeping and due return of the key.

Study carrels are strictly for the use of one person, for silent study purposes. To ensure that the Library provides an appropriate environment for users, conversation is not permitted except in places designated as discussion areas where quiet conversation is permitted (Library Regulation 15.2). These carrels are not sound proof, so any noise will disturb other users. There must be no talking or congregating in carrels.

A group study room will normally be used for course related matters. It should not be used for social matters. Groups of no more than 8 persons and no fewer than 3 persons may use the room at one time.

Audiovisual Viewing Rooms must be used for course related viewing. It should not be used for social matters or private study. Groups of no more that 10 persons and no fewer that 2 persons may use the room at one time.

Any items which are left in carrels will be removed by Library attendants each morning. Library material used in a group study room should be removed from the room when the group have completed their session.

Smoking, eating or drinking are not allowed in any part of the library.

Please report any damage in carrels or rooms to Inquiry Desk staff immediately. This includes reporting faulty locks or lights, as well as any vandalism. Theft occurs, therefore items of value should not be left unattended in locked or unlocked study carrels or rooms.

The Library takes no responsibility for personal items left in study carrels or rooms.
