Keyword Searching

When searching catalogues and databases, be ready to use a wide range of terms, both general and precise. For example:

  • Geographical names - Jordan , Pompeii , South America, Mediterranean, etc.
  • Category or Period - palaeolithic, ice age, bronze age, pleistocene, ethnography etc.
  • Add additional concepts - excavations, civilization, ritual, clothing, etc
  • Use quotation marks around two or more words to search as a phrase e.g. "stone tools" or "animal remains"
  • You can truncate words to pick up different forms of a word. e.g. archaeol* will search for archaeology, archaeological, archaeologists etc.

Each catalogue record for an item contains hypertext links to alternate related subjects/topics.
