Access Problems
There have been some recent problems with users not being able to access databases, exams, and audio recordings of lectures from outside the Library. We have found the most common causes are cookie settings, Adobe setup, and pop-up blockers. Details on how to fix these are given below.
Adobe Acrobat PDF Viewer
- If you are experiencing problems viewing PDF files (ie. blank screen or incomplete documents) then the Library recommends the following configurations depending on the version (the Library recommends version 5 or higher):
Version 5 or 6 |
Version 7 or 8 |
|---|---|
| Start the Adobe Acrobat Reader program | Start the Adobe Acrobat Reader program |
| Go to Edit | Go to Edit |
| Choose Preferences | Choose Preferences |
| Select Options or Internet | Select Internet |
| Untick ' Display PDF in browser ' | Tick ' Display PDF in browser ' |
| Click OK | Click OK |
The file must be printed using the print icon or File/Print from the Adobe Acrobat Reader and not the Print icon from your web browser.
If pages do not print/fit on A4 try the following:
- Open the 'pdf' article
- File > Print
- From the Print menu, under page scaling, select "shrink large pages".
- This will allow the article to shrink to an A4 and still be readable.
If you continue to have problems or get the error "The file is damaged ......" try refreshing the page or return to the page that contained the link and click on it again.
Clear/Accept Browser Cookies
- If you are experiencing problems accessing Databases or recorded lectures from off campus then the Library recommends the following configurations of IE, depending on the version (the Library recommends version 5 or higher).
Unsure of your version? (Select About Internet Explorer from the Help menu):
Internet Explorer Version 5 or 5.5 |
Internet Explorer 6.xx |
|---|---|
| Select Internet Options from the Tools menu | Select Internet Options from the Tools menu |
| Open the General tab (it should be the default) | Open the General tab (it should be the default) |
| Click the Settings button | Press Delete Cookies button (in the Temporary Internet files area) |
| Click the View Files button. This will display all the cookies in your system | Now open the Privacy tab |
| Select Select All from the Edit menu to select all the files | Move the bar down until it says Accept All Cookies |
| Press the Delete key on your keyboard | Press Apply |
| Confirm the deletion | Press OK |
Users of other browsers will need to consult the relevant user manuals.
Pop-Up Blockers
- Some of the Library databases use 'pop-up' screens. If you have installed Pop-Up Blockers such as Altavista or Google, then you may encounter problems searching these databases.
