Recommended Computer Requirements & Software

The La Trobe University Library provides access to many resources via this web site and the Library catalogue. These include such items as databases, electronic journals, examination papers, audiovisual resources etc. To obtain the best use of these and other online/electronic resources, the Library recommends the following minimum requirements.

Hardware
  • The Library web site and Library Catalogue can be best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. A resolution of 800 x 600 can also be used.
  • A modem speed of at least 56 Kbps is required for effective access.
Internet Browser
  • A recent version (version 6+) of Internet Explorer with Java, Javascript and cookies enabled for both PCs and Macs.
Adobe Acrobat PDF Viewer
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader is required in order to view many files that are in Portable Document Format (PDF files) eg. examination papers. There are also instructions on configuring the software if problems are encountered when viewing files.
Media Players
  • These free media players are required to listen to audio and view videos.

Flash Player
  • This software is required to view some video lectures and online tutorials. It is available from Adobe.
Scaleable Vector Graphics (SVG) Viewer
  • This software is required to view some maps provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics AusStats Service. It is available from Adobe.
    SVG is a text-based graphics language that describes images with vector shapes, text, and embedded raster graphics.
SuperTable
  • This software is required to view some documents provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics AusStats Service. It is available from Space-Time Research.
Microsoft Viewers for Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • La Trobe University lecture material can be found in different formats. They could be Word documents or PowerPoint presentations. Viewers for these are available from Microsoft.
Unzip Utility
  • A utility to 'unzip' compressed files such as 7-zip is recommended.
