Melbourne Library Redevelopment Project

The Library at the Melbourne campus has undergone a major transformation!

In a $10m redevelopment project funded by the University and the Federal Government's Better Universities Renewal Funding, students and staff of the University now have a more vibrant and contemporary library space that includes:

  • 850 additional seats, up from approximately 1200 previously
  • state-of-the-art collaborative learning spaces
  • separate study lounges for staff and postgraduate students
  • a greater variety of technology-enabled and group study spaces
  • new consultation and training rooms
  • a flexible gallery space adjoining the Agora (and a coffee kiosk to come)

Major works began on Level 1 (ground floor) of the Library in January 2010. During this stage, the entrance to the Library remained on Level 2. After Level 1 was complete, works began on the south end of Level 2. These are now complete.

To allow for changing use of study space and to make way for the building works, approximately 18.5km of low use, older material and print material with electronic equivalents in other collections was relocated to the Library's on-site and off-site stores (Library Annexe) where it remains accessible to staff and students.

We'd like to thank students for their patience during the building works and thank everyone within the University community and beyond who have been a part of this exciting project and who have helped to make it a reality.
