Melbourne Library Redevelopment Project (2009 - 2011)
What's moved
Current print Serials (Journals) and Government Publications - 2000 to the present - are now housed in the open compactus on Level 2 of the Library.
The high demand for study space in the Library meant that during construction, all of Level 1 (ground floor) had to be cleared and areas for student study maintained elsewhere. This has been achieved through the relocation to Level 2 and 3 of all seating and computer workstations previously on Level 1.
Major collection moves were required and Library staff developed a detailed and carefully considered relocation strategy for lower use print materials and materials with electronic equivalents to be moved.
Moving a significant proportion of the Library's print collection is a major project for the Library, and the largest move of collection items in its history. As the Library has been buying electronic journal back sets at a rapid rate, the impact of these moves is likely to be less than it would have been if such a move was undertaken just a few years ago.
The relocation of collections to the Annexe took place over the summer break from November 2009 to January 2010.
The relocation of 320,000 lower use volumes from the Bundoora General collection on Level 3 to the Library's onsite store on the ground floor is due for completion by April 2010. These are volumes that have not been used in the past 6 years and will still be accessible to staff and students once the move is completed.
Materials from the collections outlined below have been moved to the Library Annexe.
Government Publications
High use monographs in the Government Publications collection have been recatalogued to the Bundoora General collection and the remaining low use items have been relocated to the offsite store. Victorian and Commonwealth Parliamentary papers and Hansard have remained onsite in the Library. Currently received print serial titles have been split, with 2000 to the present staying onsite, and pre 2000 moved to offsite storage.
Serials (Journals)
Print journal titles with electronic equivalents, closed runs, or lower use have been moved to the offsite Annexe, and a print and electronic delivery service from the facility has been established. Serials still being received in print format have been split, with 2000 to the present remaining onsite and the pre 2000 volumes going to the offsite store.
