STOP 1: Please walk to STOP 1 at the front of the Audio Visual Collection and press start on your player.

Welcome to the David Mann Library. This library services the staff and students of La Trobe University, Wodonga Institute of TAFE and The Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre. You are about to be taken on an audio tour of the library’s facilities and services to familiarize you with the location of various collections.

You have already walked through the library foyer. You may have noticed a student notice board, pay telephone, toilets, drinking fountain, seating area and snack and drink machines.

As you begin the tour, please refer to the laminated library map. Walk to the relevant STOP, listen to the information, then move to the next STOP.

The library has two levels. This is Level 1. You can use the stairs or the lift to go to Level 2.

Located on Level 1 is the Audiovisual, Reserve, Curriculum, Newspaper and Reference collections. There are photocopying, computer access and printing facilities, quiet reading, and individual and group work areas on this floor. The loans and information desk is also on this level. The staff at the desk will answer your questions, give out useful guides and forms and deal with your borrowing needs.

You are standing near the audiovisual collection or AV collection for short. This collection contains videos and DVD’s, many with notes. Videos can be booked in advance on the library catalogue. You will need a Library PIN (TAFE) to make a booking. A-V items may be borrowed for 7 days.

You can view videos here in the library. There are two access points here. Bring your own headphones to view a video in this area. There is also video and DVD players as well as computer access available in Group Study Rooms 2, 3 & 4. Group Study Rooms may be booked in advance at the Information Desk.

PAUSE THE PLAYER AND MOVE TO STOP 2 – THE PHOTOCOPY ROOM

There are two self-service photocopiers in this room for student use, as well as a vending machine for the purchase and recharging of photo copy cards.

Instructions for the purchase of cards is on the front of the vending machine. The initial cost of a copy card is $2. This includes $1 worth of photocopying. You can add extra credit by depositing money in the machine and pressing the revalue button. Receipts are only issued if required. Press any button after your transaction to receive a receipt. Write your name on the back of the card so that it can be returned in case of loss.

Your copy card can also be used for printing from the computers. Just place the copy card in the card reader attached to the relevant machine. Photocopying and printing is charged at the rate of 11c per A4 sheet and 22c for an A3 sheet.

Remember that copying must comply with the Copyright Act, which limits the amount and type of copying you can do. Read the notice near each machine carefully before copying. If you require assistance or need change, please contact staff at the loans desk.

Stop 3 The Reserve Room: This room holds the Reserve collection. This collection is for highly used items that have been placed here at the request of staff.  The reserve collection can contain books, videos, DVDs, articles and reading packs. You can read or photocopy items on reserve in here. Or you can borrow items for up to three hours and use them elsewhere in the library.

If you want to borrow any item to use elsewhere please leave it on the dark grey desk; ring the bell provided to have loans staff attend to your request; walk through the security gate and go around to the loans desk. Staff will bring your items around to the loans desk to avoid the security system being activated. Have your ID card ready.

Most reserve items may be borrowed overnight. You can only borrow them half an hour before closing and must be returned within a half hour of opening the following day. (Note: see revised times of web page due to TRIAL).

Stop 4 The Loans Desk: This is the place to come to for general enquiries, to borrow and to return items. Use the book chute in the desk wall to return items when the library is open. There’s a book chute at the front entrance of the library for returning items after hours.

The Information desk is where you come when you need assistance with your research, finding items in the library, referencing, or to talk to the Reference librarian who is available between 9 - 5pm each weekday. This is also where you can also make a booking for a Group Study Room. There’s a booking sheet in front of you on the desk. You can book on the day or in advance for a room. Now look opposite to see the Reference Collection.

The Reference Collection holds dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, directories, statistical information, state and commonwealth legislation and bibliographies. Reference Staff are happy to help you locate and use these items. These items are for use in the library only. The Australian Bureau of Statistics publications are in the last row of the collection. Walk around the back of the collection by the windows to Stop 5.

Stop 5 The Catalogue Computers: To check on the availability of an item on the library catalogue you can use one of these dedicated workstations on the high bench. There are other catalogue workstations on Level Two.

If you need to access the Internet or print out information you will need to use one of the computers in front of you.

These computers are for students to use to access the Library catalogue and the Internet and do assignments. To use them you will need to have a login which you will have as an enrolled student. Printing is available from these workstations. You can press print on your computer and then collect your printing from the network printer station located at the end of the bank of computers. You will need to use your photo copy card to pay for printing. If you are a TAFE student please see the loans desk regarding use of computers and printing.

There is no time restriction on the workstations but you may be asked to share access during busy times.

Now look towards the Yellow wall to see the Curriculum Collection.

The Curriculum Collection has education kits and other resources that are available for loan. They are of particular interest to Education students and items are often borrowed for their teaching rounds.  There is also a computer in this area if you need to do group work and require a computer.

Ahead of you is the Library's Training Room. This is where you would come if a lecturer or the library has organized a hands-on training session.

If you look towards the back of the library you’ll see four Group Study Rooms. You can book them for up to 2 hours. Make the booking at the Information Desk.

Group Study Room 1 has specialised equipment for people with disabilities.

Stop 6: The Newspaper Collection. The library receives The Border Mail, The Herald Sun, The Age and The Australian, daily. Ask at the Information Desk for assistance to locate information in newspapers and how to use the microfilm reader/printer.

As you walk beside these cabinets look to the left to see the Network Printer and the Library guides and forms stand.

This stand has useful sheets on searching electronic sources, forms, and general information about services. Pause the player. Please have a look and select any guides you may be interested in.

Stop 7: These orange chairs are for quiet reading.

You will notice two work tables situated below the stairs.

Tables are positioned around the library for individuals or groups to use. Noise-levels need to be kept to a minimum. When discussion is required remember to book a study room.

You are now ready to move to Level 2 which houses the General and Journal collection, study carrels and work tables, the IT department, as well as facilities for photocopying, searching the catalogue and telephone help. Wireless network available here.

You can either use the stairs or the life near the photocopy room to get to level 2.

Stop 8: In front of the lift on Level 2.

General collection. Items marked A-W General on the catalogue are housed in this General Collection and may be borrowed. Some items in high demand may be restricted to 3 or 7 day loan periods. They have a red sticker on the spine.  Library numbers are displayed at the end of each aisle, to help you locate specific items.

To your left is the Journal collection. This is housed separately from the Journal collection because journals can only be used in the library. Journals can be located by searching the catalogue under the journal title. The latest issues of journals are placed on display shelves to your right near the front of the building. The library also has a large number of journals available online, in full text which can be accessed on and off campus.

This area also has a number of study carrels and work tables you are most welcome to use for individual study purposes.

The IT or Information Technology department is around the corner at the back of the Journal collection. The IT staff are available to answer queries. Please check access times downstairs near the lift or ask at the Information desk when the staff are available. All other IT enquiries use telephone HELP phone downstairs.

Take a walk around this floor to locate the following facilities before you exit:

Photocopying. There is a photocopier available on this level for your convenience.

Catalogue computers and telephone help support. You have access to two computers on this level to search the Library catalogue. If you need help the telephone links directly with loans staff downstairs.

Work tables with power point access for personal laptop computers are along the western wall overlooking the lake.  Wireless access on centre tables.

Just before we finish, there are a few things to note.

Firstly, food and drinks (except bottled-water) are not to be consumed in the library except in the foyer.

We also request that you turn your mobile phone off while in the library.

Thirdly, in the interests of your safety there are evacuation posters on each level. Please take the time to check out the location of the emergency exits.

Finally, we want you to be able to make the most of our services. Please see the Librarian on the Information desk to organize a library PIN number (TAFE) to be able to access services off campus and for a short familiarization on how the catalogue works.
