Bendigo Library Podcast Transcript

Welcome to our self-guided tour of the Heyward Library. During this tour we aim to familiarize you with the layout of the Library and introduce you to some of our services. The Library has two levels and we will begin our tour at the entrance on level one. As the Library is a place to study quietly and work on group projects, we do ask that your mobile phone be turned to 'silent' whilst inside

Stepping through the Library doors you will see a returns chute on the left. Use this chute to return your loans between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

As you walk into the Library through the security gate you will see the Open Reserve Area and the Loans Desk to your right. This is where you borrow Library resources, including items from the Reserve collection. You will need your student card for all borrowing. There is another returns chute at the desk where loans can be returned between 5pm and 9pm Monday to Thursday, and on Saturday and Sunday between 1pm and 4.30pm. Binding machines, and electric staplers are available for use at this desk, and you can purchase the materials you need to bind your assignments. The staff here can also assist with use of the photocopiers.

The Open Reserve Collection is at the entrance of the library on your right where you can browse the shelves, use items in the area or borrow for specific periods of time. There is a single security gate leading into the area. The Open Reserve Collection contains high use items such as recommended readings and prescribed texts which can be borrowed for 3 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days or overnight. There are photocopiers and computers available for use inside this area.

Opposite the Loans Desk is the Information Desk. Ask here for assistance with using the Library and to locate resources for your assignments. For example, staff can help you with your information needs through use of the catalogue, using the subject databases, and finding items on the shelves. Wireless network help is also available here for 2 hours each weekday during semester. The hours can change so look for the sign at the Information Desk.

In between the Loans desk and the Information Desk is a self service checkout unit which enables you to borrow books. The unit is easy to use – just follow the instructions on the screen. If you need help ask at the Loans Desk.

Facing the Information Desk, you will see to your left some computers on a high bench which are used for quick searches of the Library catalogue. On your right is a group of sit down computer workstations located inside a screen of blue panels. These are called the Information Stations. They provide access to the Internet, the Library homepage, catalogue, and a selection of Microsoft Office software. Some of the computers in the Library require you to log in – just use your University username and password. All computers in the Library are connected to three networked self service printers, and one of these printers is located beside the Information Stations. You will need to use your student card to pay for printing. Ask at the Information Desk if you require help.

Stand facing the Information Stations and to your right you will see some photocopiers and two card loading machines. Remember that all copying must comply with the Copyright Act. These regulations, and instructions on how to use the copiers are on the notice board behind the copiers. Use your student card for photocopying – you can recharge your student card to pay for printing and photocopying at the reload machines by following the instructions on the front of the machines. For further assistance with photocopying or recharging ask at the Loans Desk.

Behind the photocopiers is the Audiovisual room. Enter this room to access the CD collection, the AV collection, and the microfilm collection. The AV collection includes DVDs, videos, kits and computer software, all of which can be borrowed. Two microfilm & microfiche reader/printers are available as well as a multimedia computer, a stereo, video and DVD players. So you can use materials right here in the AV room, and headphones are available from the Loans Desk.

Leave the AV Room and turn right, walking between the photocopier screens and the blue Information Station panels, on your left is the new book and journal issue display. You will then pass a colour photocopier on you left. Stop at this point while we outline the facilities and collections around you. In front of you are some study tables, student use computers, and a newspaper stand. Daily newspapers (the Bendigo Advertiser, The Age, The Australian and the Financial Review) remain on the stand for the current week, and are then removed and stored in the Reserve area for a few months. Older copies of some newspapers are available on microfilm in the Audiovisual Room.

To your right is the Library Training Room containing more computers. This room is used by Librarians to teach classes. When the room is not booked for classes, students are able to use the computers. There is also a self service printer, one of the three networked printers in the Library. Check the schedule beside the door for Training Room availability.

To your left is the Learning Resource Collection or LRC. This collection is of particular interest to Education students and houses curriculum and support material for primary and secondary school teaching, including junior fiction and non-fiction, children’s story books, and posters.

Return to the self service check out unit and continue straight ahead between the 2 service desks (Loans Desk and Information Desk) and past the computers on the high bench, then up the stairs to the 2nd level. This level is a designated quiet study area and consists of the Main Collection, the Journal Collection, the Quarto Collection, study desks and reading area. At the top of the stairs turn left. On your right is the start of the main collection containing books that you can borrow, and on your left are 10 study carrels with power outlets on the wall for laptop use. Please note, this is a quiet study zone. The journal collection is shelved on the left of the walkway and main collection on the right. The journals are for use in the Library only. Many journals are now available online via the Library catalogue. Call numbers are displayed on the book and journal shelves to help you locate items. At the end of each shelving bay there are signs to help you locate times using the numbering system (or call number range).

Walk straight ahead and you will notice on your far right, over the other side of the Main Collection, is a larger quiet study area. Keep walking past more study desks and student access computers, and follow the walkway around to the left. The main book collection continues on your right, and the journals on your left.

As you walk you will see some lounge chairs for quiet reading and a few individual study tables.

Pause at the top of the stairs. On your far right near the back wall is the Quarto Collection containing larger sized books which are available for loan. Look down onto the mezzanine where you will see a bank of sit down computers, another self service printer, and a group study area for quiet discussion.

Proceed down the stairs to the first level and stop at the bottom of the stairs. On your right along the wall is the Pamphlet collection, the Australian Bureau of Statistics collection and the Thesis collection. The pamphlets and theses are available for loan, while the ABS material is for use in the library. To your left along the wall is the Learning Resource Collection equipment cupboard containing games, kits, musical instruments, puppets, and models, all of which can be borrowed. In front of the cupboard is the map collection and a map reading table. The maps cannot be borrowed. The shelf under the map reading table holds many atlases. Looking ahead on the left is the Reference Collection which includes encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries and directories. The items in this collection cannot be borrowed.

In the area near the Learning Resource Collection are some quiet group study tables and tables located along the walls that provide power outlets for laptop computers. All areas of the library have wireless internet access for laptop computers.

Walk ahead past the Reference collection towards the Information Desk and pause. On your left are two computers against the blue screens. The computer closest to the Information Desk has priority use by special needs students. Both computers have scanners attached for student use.

You are now back at the Information Desk and have completed the tour. Thanks for visiting and we hope this has been valuable. Further information about the Library, including opening hours, borrowing limits, and borrowing from other La Trobe campus Libraries is available on the Library homepage.

If you have any questions, please ask the staff at the Information Desk. Remember Library staff are here to assist you.
