Details

This Inquiry focused on establishing the numbers of and outcomes for people who had been sent to the State of Western Australia by British and Maltese governments as unaccompanied child migrants. A major focus of the investigation was to report on action necessary to assist former child migrants with the tracing of their family history and finding their relatives. The Inquiry also investigated the history of child migration schemes, agencies involved, institutions children were sent to and the role of governments in supporting the schemes and the effects of these schemes on people's lives.

Findings
The Interim Report of the Select Committee found that there was increased community awareness of the existence of child migration, and that these schemes were actively promoted by governments. The Committee's investigations extended understandings of the history and impact of child migration to WA

Recommendations
4 recommendations were made. The Interim Report suggested the establishment of a Royal Commission.

Further Action
A Royal Commission was not established. However, this Inquiry did inform the later Commonwealth Senate Inquiry into child migration.
