Details

The Confidential Listening and Assistance Service was established to provide assistance to people who alleged abuse in state care, providing them with the opportunity to tell their story with an emphasis on their current and future needs.

The Process
The Service is based on a confidential forum model to enable people to speak about their experiences. The work of the Service also included panel meetings, liaison with relevant government departments, meetings with non-government organisations and support group.

The Service was available across New Zealand in a range of locations, including Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, Tauranga, Whangerei, Dunedin, Whakatane, Hamilton, Napier, Rotorua, Masterton, Whanganui, Gisborne, Invercargill, Kaitaia/Kaikohe, Nelson/Blenheim, Taupo, New Plymouth, Timaru, Greymouth, Sydney (Australia) and in several prisons.

Gender
551 men and 552 women shared their stories with the The Confidential Listening and Assistance Service.

Institutions
The Service was available to former residents of foster homes, institutions, asylums, health camps, borstals (reformatories).

Findings
The Service heard stories of abuse and systems failure across the full range of institutions.
