Borrowing from other academic libraries in Victoria, via the CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program.

The CAVAL (Co-operative Action by Victorian Academic Libraries) Reciprocal Borrowing Program is a scheme whereby staff and students of participating libraries are able to borrow material from other libraries in the scheme.

How do you find out what material other libraries hold?

To check whether a library you are planning to visit has an item you wish to use, select the relevant catalogue from any of the Major Victorian Libraries. Libraries Australia will help you find resources including books, journals, pictures, music, maps, newspapers and electronic documents, located in Australia and overseas. Contact your campus library Information Desk for a password. The SIAL (Serials in Australian Libraries) can be used to locate journals.

Are you eligible?

Students and staff of La Trobe University are eligible to use the program. Ask at the Loans/Inquiry Desks of any campus library if you are unsure about your eligibility.

How do you obtain a CAVAL card?

In order to participate you must first register in the Reciprocal Borrowing Program. Apply at the Loans/Inquiry Desks at any La Trobe University campus library. You must have your current La Trobe University student/staff card.
Alternatively, you may register online. A CAVAL card will be sent to you by mail. Upon receipt, the CAVAL card must be signed.

How do you enrol at another library?

Take your current CAVAL card and your La Trobe University student/staff card to the Loans/Inquiry Desk of the library you wish to borrow from. You must present both your current La Trobe University ID card and CAVAL card each time you borrow.

It is your responsibility to make yourself familiar with the conditions of loan at each of the libraries from which you borrow.

Privacy Statement

The CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program is subject to the Information Act 2000 (Vic). The participating libraries are committed to protecting your privacy. The personal information you agree to provide when you enrol will be shared between the libraries in relation to the provision of lending services, including mechanisms for the recording and payment of any outstanding debts in relation to overdue or lost items. You may access such information upon request at the Library.
