Request a Hold Online

What does 'Request a Hold' mean?
You can place requests on most items which are currently on loan or available at another Campus, directly online via the Library catalogue.

If your request is successful, it will be shown as a "Hold" in your "My Library" details. You will be notified by email when the item is available for collection from the Holdshelf or Loans Desk where it will be kept for 7 days.

What material can be requested?
Holds can be requested for most items when they are:

  • On loan
  • On Display
  • In process or In transit
  • On the holdshelf
  • Located at another Campus Library (and not available at your home campus)

Items on your local campus which have an Available status in the catalogue (eg. are not on loan) cannot be requested - you should collect these yourself!

What material cannot be requested?
Holds cannot be requested for the following:

  • High demand material eg. Reserve, 24 hour, 3 and 7 day loans
  • Audiovisual material eg. videos, DVDs, kits etc
  • Books that have a Status of Library Use Only
  • Items already on loan to you or that you have already requested.

Some Audiovisual material and copies of journal articles can be borrowed from other campus libraries. More detailed information is available.

Who can request a hold?
All library patrons can request a hold on most items. Some categories however, are restricted to students and staff of La Trobe University.

How do you request a hold?
You can request a hold directly online via the Library catalogue.

When the item has been found in the Library catalogue, select: Request a Hold or Request Hold
Choose the Pick-up location where you intend to collect the item
Specify a 'Not needed after' date after which you no longer want the item (this is optional)
Enter your username and password
When you require a specific volume or copy, mark the circle to the left of the appropriate copy.
Select: Request selected item
If your request is successful, a message will appear "Your request will be delivered to (pickup location you specified) when it is available "
Always go to My Library to ensure your request has been added to your library record as a hold. If the item does not display on your client record as a hold, enquire at the Loans/Inquiry Desks

You will be notified by email when a requested item is ready for pickup and the item will be kept on the Holdshelf that you specified for 7 days.

If more than one person requires the item, a hold queue forms, and the borrowing period reduces to one week.
