Library support for higher degree students
If you are enrolled in a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Honours, Masters or Doctorate studies, you are considered a higher degree student.
In addition to receiving increased Borrowing privileges, the Library also offers support in the following ways.
Orientation programs specific to postgraduate students
Orientation programs are commonly held at the beginning of each semester and introduce new postgraduate students to library resources and services, including the use of the Interlending and Document Delivery Service.
Training in using resources
Classes are prepared and delivered in response to requests by lecturers, coordinators or supervisors, as well as offered generically. These sessions are often organised as part of the course schedule and include training on using the electronic resources relevant to that area of study.
Any training session scheduled for postgraduate students is advertised on the Training page and can be viewed via faculty, campus or content of training program.
Individual assistance
Individual assistance is available as requested, either in a one-to-one consultation or in small groups. Assistance may be offered face to face, via email using Ask a Librarian.
Librarians offer advice on such areas as:
- analysis of your research question
- mapping relevant topic keywords
- search strategy formulation
- advice about selecting a database
- demonstration of various database search techniques.
Support materials
Faculty librarians create materials to support study in specific areas. These resources may be linked under Library Guides or from faculty and school webpages.
Find out about our services
In addition to services outlined for Students on the library website, librarians add information on library services to faculty and school guides and to the various student handbooks. They also attend school-based information sessions, when invited, and participate in any general postgraduate orientation or information sessions.
Printed guides to library services are produced for students, and the library liaises regularly with LUPA to promote services and events relevant to postgraduates.
Put your Thesis Online
At La Trobe all PhD, Masters by research, and professional doctorate students are required to lodge a digital copy of their thesis in the Research Repository as a condition of graduation. See Digital Thesis deposit procedures for more details.
Document Delivery
The Library offers and actively promotes a comprehensive interlibrary document delivery service to all postgraduate students. Students are able to request materials online and articles and chapters may be delivered to the student's desktop. Students may receive 25 items per year (either books or journal articles) from external libraries, with Masters and PhD students receiving an extended quota of 100 items per year.
There is no charge for this service.
Further information is available from the Interlending and Document Delivery Service.
To find out more, please contact your Faculty Librarians or Campus Librarians at the campus where you are enrolled.
