Text

Chiamando un'astorella ch'era posa
su l'arbor novo, che d'Amor F nido.
mi fu, come oselleto, in aer ascosa.

I' pur l'andai seguendo al dolce crido
per foreste, canpagne, strade e porti.
s8 che lei cercar ancor m'ancide.

Ma spero di mercT mille conforti.
ch'io l'ho veduta in altrui gabiola
cum gli ati primi zentili et acorti:

nel cor doneza e per la gabia vola.

Translation

A goshawk calling out to me.
perched on the young tree which is the seat of Love.
disappeared from my sight like a bird in the air.

Still I went following her sweet cry
through forests, fields, roads and havens.
so that I am killing myself looking for her.

And you I hope for a thousand consolations from her mercy.
because I have seen her, in somebody else's cage.
with the same kind and prudent attitudes as before:

she flies about her in her cage but flirts with her heart.
