De soto 'l verde vidi i ochi vaghi
che mi so servo cum desio mirava
s8 che de lor pi· me inamorava.

E pur convien che la mia vista bassi
quando ver mi i moven la soa luze;
ma po 'l desio a lor mirar m'aduze

(Vivo suggett'e chiamoti merzede)
cum ogni brama d'eser so cum fede.

Translation

Under the greenery I saw the lovely eyes
which I, her servant, admired with desire.
so that my love for them did grow apace.

And yet it's proper to lower my gaze
when they shine towards me;
but then my desire induces me to return her stare.

I am her liege and invoke your mercy
and wish to pledge my faith to you.
