ond'io, per fargli onor, levai cortese.

Et ella che cognosce z= ch'io sento.
quando me vide, alora
disse parola ch'ancor me inamora:

- Cambio te renda Dio del ben che fai. -
Qual io rimasi nol saprei dir mai.

Ben la conobi a la senbianza onesta:
Amor per lei m'ancise.
ond'io per farle onor l'andai cortese.

Com'io rimasi nol potrei dir mai:
chambio ti renda Dio del ben che fai.

Translation

When the air grows dark
and the stars begin to show.
a very beautiful woman appeared to me.

I knew her from her honest face.
so that I was fired with love for her.
and I courteously stood up to honour her.

And when she saw me then.
knowing how I feel about her.
she said something which still fills me with love:

"May God reward you for the good you do to me".
I could never tell the impression those words left in me.
