Text

Nel mezzo gia del mar la navicella
tra l'oriente e l'occident'F giunta
che mi men'a ferire scura punta.

col vento tempestoso e quella stella
la qual fedel mi fece, che pi· forte
afretta sua giornata e la mia morte.

Lasso, natura forza non le da
che ma' per temp'ella dia volta 'n cia.

Translation

On the high seas my little ship has reached
a point 'midst east and west, set on a course
towards a dark point where I may be shipwrecked.

in a tempestuous wind, under that star
which made me her liege servant, and in haste
brings its day to an end, and to me death.

Alas! my ship did not receive from nature
the strength to veer away while there was still time.
