Text

Povero pelegrin salito al monte
mi veggio lasso e scender a la valle.
dov'F tostano e scuro ogni suo calle.

E erta vana, dilettosa e falsa.
quanto se' vaga a l'ignorante ingegno!
Guai a chi passa e non riguarda il segno.

Passato sono, e sto e vo e corro:
stella mi doni lume, a cui ricorro.

Translation

I, a poor pilgrim, having climbed the mountain.
feel tired, and make my way down to the valley
where every path is dark and short.

O delectable, vain and worthless climb.
how easily you lure the ignorant mind!
It's dangerous to pass and miss the sign.

I have come that way; and stay, and go, and run;
may the star give me light to which I turn.
