Text

Nel sommo grado e sanz'error felice
signor ma' non ascende.
che gustar non intende
di liberalita l'alta radice.

Ma sol costei seguendo.
ne l'alto segio tien suo principato.
magnanimo faccendo
ciascun che merta e mai non fia ingrato.
al popol suo benigno e sempre grato.
il cui disio sol brama.
Virt· con vera fama
leva la mente e solve ogni pendice.

Translation

A lord who does not intend to attain
the true source of liberality
never reaches his highest dignity
without some happy chance.

But, merely by following this lady.
he can reach the high seat of power.
giving the deserving such a reward
that they will never be ungrateful.
always benevolent and acceptable to his people
whose wishes are his only wish.
Virtue with true fame
elevates the mind and scales every height.
