Text

PerchT canzato F 'l mondo da l'antico
non so chi tener deza per amico.

chT tal dolceza in viso mi mostra

dentro la voglia soa, buona o ria;
ma pur so tanto de la mente mia
che 'l buon mi piaze e non amo l'inico.

Translation

Since the world has changed from what it used to be.
and I do not know whom I should deem a friend;

because the face smiles so sweetly of a man
who holds hostile intentions in his mind.
and would rejoice and laugh if he could cause me
a loss by gaining something he holds dear.
Often I give my trust to someone who.
put to the test, declares himself my enemy.

That's why I cannot know who my friends are.
and love me;
because their intentions.
good or bad, are hidden within them;
and yet that much I know of my own mind:
that I like goodness and detest iniquity.
