Text

La vaga luce che fa invidi' al sole
quando si mostra avant'a gli ochi miei
i' tremo di dolceza e dico oimei.

OmF omF omF, vedi ch'i' moro
per quelle treze d'oro
che m'annodaro 'l cor ch'i' port'anciso.
nT 'n ci= liss'ha nT chied'altro tesoro
che quell'alma ch'adoro.
che scesa'n terra par del paradiso.
E quasi 'l corpo dall'alm'F diviso
el che mi dole, nT so s'i' vorrei
sol per uscir di tanti affanni rei.

Translation

When the sweet light of whom the sun is envious
appears before my eyes.
I tremble with sweet emotion, and say: "Alas!"

Alas! you see that I am dying
because of those golden tresses
which chained my heart, bleeding to death.
But my heart does not mind, nor does it seek
other treasure than the soul I worship.
who seems descended to earth from paradise.
My body is almost divided from my soul.
which pains me; but I don't know whether I would
prefer to die, if only to escape such dire anguish.
